This is an amazing piece of pro football history from the Green Bay Packers Vince Lombardi era. Much more rare than Bart Starr’s 1957 Topps RC too!
This Program is from the last game at old City Stadium during the Green Bay Packers' last game there on November 18, 1956. A less-than-capacity crowd of 17,986 came out for the final game This particular Program is notable not only for its celebration of the Packers' past…saying good-bye to their home of over thirty years, but the glimpse at the team's future, as rookie quarterback Bart Starr made his first NFL start, and threw his first touchdown pass to Billy Howton for a 39-yard score in the first quarter. Bart Starr completed six passes for 63 yards & 1 TD on the day.
City Stadium was a horseshoe-shaped stadium that was made of wood and originally did not have any toilet facilities. It stood behind East High School and next to the East River. The Packers used the school for locker room facilities, but visiting teams often dressed at their hotel before the game rather than use the lockers at East High. The stadium originally seated 6,000 and its capacity was gradually expanded to 25,000. The Packers compiled a record of 88-41-7 (.673) at City Stadium, including NFL championship seasons in 1929, 1930, 1931, 1936, 1939, and 1944.
