Circa 1880's Extract Tabasco New Iberia Bottle

Description

This is a Circa 1880's Extract Tabasco New Iberia Bottle.  A really neat octagonal bottle that is embossed Extract Tabasco New Iberia on the bottom.   According to Pepper Sauce lore in the New Iberia area, this tabasco bottle may either be attributed to the McIlhenny Tabasco Co.,
Maunsel White (Veteran of the Battle of New Orleans and notable merchant,
or one of McIlhenny’s many other early competitors in the area.
The bottle is free of ant chips or cracks. It probably could use a bath, but I will leave that up to the new owner. The bottle is a nice shade of purple in color.
The bottle would have originally been clear, but when exposed to sunlight turns purple due to manganese in the early glass making process.
An interesting characteristic of colorless glasses which contain manganese dioxide as a decolorizer is their tendency to turn different shades of purple when exposed to the rays of the sun or to other ultra-violet sources. It is a photochemical phenomenon that is not yet perfectly understood.
