What a unique looking miniature antique bottle with the embossed picture of a jumping fox!
This was the product of a soda water bottler in SEATTLE WASHINGTON, J.G. Fox, thus the little 'Fox' trademark
.
Our introduction to these little Fox bottles was when an old saloon building in a small NW Montana town was being razed nearly 50 years ago. When the project was completed a dozer scraped the dirt off of the lot and in a corner of the lot, a small pile of these were uncovered, mostly broken in the process, amidst piles of broken liquor bottles, flasks, shot glasses, barware, etc. An old timer on the scene recognized the little bottles, he called them 'Oyster Shooters', and told me that back in the day they were sold in saloons where one would be emptied into a pitcher of beer.
They contained an oyster or clam concentrate which flavored and 'beefed' up the beer. Must of been where that saying originated, "beer is no longer just for breakfast anymore!" Today you hear of 'red' beer, where a can of tomato juice is dumped into a pitcher of beer, well back then it was similar, a clam or oyster beer, thanks to these little Fox concentrates.
The amethyst color of this little bottle resulted from it being subjected to ultra violet rays, which causes a chemical reaction and the manganese (a mineral) in the glass oxidizes and turns a lavender color. Much like copper turns green over time? Manganese turns purple.
With few exceptions, only clear glass from before 1914 will turn this amethyst color so not only does this AMETHYST color make it a great looking bottle but also authenticates it
as being truly antique,
